Newborn Photography

The Origins of Newborn Photography

Newborn photography only really became a ‘thing’ in the 1990’s and it’s initial popularity is often credited to Anne Geddes.

Anne Geddes had the original idea to style babies, to dress them as a whole raft of adorable animals and flowers.  Her work became very well-known and there the first seed for newborn photography was born.

The millennial love of social media and documenting our lives then watered the seed that Anne Geddes work had sown.

Leading to the normalisation of professional newborn photography.

Newborn Photography Fashions

Newborn photography has since continued along this very styled and posed path that Anne Geddes initially created.

Parents are given a raft of choice from different colour backgrounds, a variety of bright and exciting wraps, right through to hair bands made specifically for little newborn babies to wear.

Then babies are encouraged into a deep sleep so that the photographer can painstakingly pose them into positions known as ‘the froggy’ or the ‘potato sack’.

However beautiful as these images are, I’ve always yearned for something different. For images that told more of a story.

Introducing Natural Newborn Photography

Although I had originally trained in newborn posing, I soon realised that this style of newborn photography wasn’t right for me.

I wanted my images to show more than what the baby looked like in a position I’d put them in.

It’s because of this that I chose to specialise in a more natural style of newborn photography, one in which the baby leads the session.

Baby-led newborn photography allows me to capture the baby as they truly are and create images that will spark memories when parents see them.

Like how their baby moved, how they held their arms when they slept, the little faces they’d pull, the way they liked their hands with fingers all scrunched up, or stretched out.

These little details which are so unique to every baby and are so beautiful to capture.
